What can you do when your NDIS Funding runs out and you still require care?
Navigating life with the support of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can make a world of difference. But what happens when your funding runs out before your next review date, and you still need essential support? It can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone, and there are steps you can take to get help.
Before anything else, it’s important to look at how your current plan has been used. Sometimes, funding runs out due to unexpected costs or a mismatch between allocated budgets and actual needs. Review your spending reports to identify where most of the funds have gone.
Tip: If you have a plan manager, ask them for a detailed breakdown of your spending.
Your support coordinator or plan manager can help you understand your options. They may be able to reallocate unused funds from other categories (if flexibility allows) or assist you in preparing for a review or change of circumstances.
Tip: Communication is key. The sooner you reach out for help, the better.
If your needs have changed or your funding has run out due to unforeseen circumstances, you can request a plan review or a review due to a change in circumstances.
You may be eligible for additional funding if:
Your health or situation has changed.
You need new or increased support.
Your current plan does not reflect your actual needs.
How to do this:
Complete the ‘Change of Circumstances’ form on the NDIS website.
Provide supporting evidence from allied health professionals, GPs, or other relevant providers.
In some cases, you may be able to access interim or emergency support through your local area coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator. While this isn’t guaranteed, it’s worth discussing with them, especially if your situation is urgent or your health and wellbeing are at risk.
While NDIS funding is vital, there may be other services available in your community or through state-funded programs that can help bridge the gap temporarily. This might include:
Local council support services
Non-profit organisations
Carer support groups or respite services
Your support coordinator or LAC may know of options available in your area.
Keep records of all correspondence, medical reports, invoices, and incidents that support your need for additional funding. Having thorough documentation will strengthen your case if you need to request a review.
You’re not expected to do this alone. There are advocacy services and NDIS appeals support teams that can help guide you through the process, especially if you’re feeling stuck or unsure.
Running out of NDIS funding can be stressful, but it doesn’t mean the end of your support. There are clear pathways to get help and ensure your care continues. The most important thing is to speak up early, gather your information, and lean on the supports around you.
